As a newly acclaimed festival enthusiast who has two seasons of Coachella, and one weekend of Panorama under his belt, it is safe to say that I have acquired just enough knowledge on essential tips that are sure to help you survive music festivals.

Consider this an insider tip. Here are some advice I wish I knew, and things to note as you prepare to frolic on festival grounds with some your best buddies snapping pictures in your festival inspired looks as you sing, dance, and laugh lightheartedly.

Sunscreen

If you’re doing music festivals the proper way, it means you’re going to be spending a lot of time outdoor in the sun for an entire weekend. One of the kindest things you can do for yourself is to make sure your skin is protected from sun rays. Opting for a broad spectrum sunscreen that is also water resistant is what you should have handy to avoid skin sun burn, and discoloration.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Some music festivals are larger than others but if one thing is guaranteed, it’s the fact that you’ll be spending a lot of time on your feet. Whether it’s walking from stage to stage to catch different acts or simply arriving and leaving the venue, it’s important to make sure your shoes make it easy for you. While you’ll see a lot of boots, and sometimes variations in loafers at some of these festivals, I’ve found that a comfortable pair of sneakers you don’t mind getting dirty is an ideal choice.

Bring A Bag

(but Make Sure It’s Super Light)

Music Festivals have prompted the resurgence of fanny packs, and while some might think it’s all just part of a second rate trend, the idea actually proves to be quite utilitarian. Real Talk: you’re going to be out on a field all day moving around quickly and using up most of your energy in an environment that is not so convenient - the last thing you want is to have a bag weighing you down. The adoption of a fanny pack or light cross body bag is designed for the purpose of being able to store the basic festival essentials (sunscreen, cardholders, chargers, medication, water, shuttle passes, you name it).

Pro Tip: Stay hydrated

Just think about it. You’ll be dancing and singing at the top of your lungs to your favorite tunes for an entire day with no access to air conditioning or space to cool off, so you will burn out easily. Make sure to drink a lot of water to keep your energy up and immune system going.
