Upon entering the venue, all guests were asked to put their phones away as they were guided into a short meditation. Among the clamor of comings and goings that fashion week is known for, this forced silence was a grounding beginning that reset all rushed minds.
As the music faded in, and the runway lit up, the world was introduced to Pause, the title of Bassike’s Resort ‘22 collection.
The collection was inspired by the small moments of respite that we experience in the hustle and bustle of our lives. Creative Director of Bassike, Deborah Sams, conceptually explores what we feel between action and reaction. This quiet chaos is symbolically referenced as a recurring motif in the prints that contrast with the clean lines and tonal colors of each design on the runway: a constant reminder to pause.
While some brands start fresh each season, bassike continues to build and evolve on what has been into what is. Most noticeably seen from key design elements of their past Men’s and Women’s seasons being brought into the now. It’s what makes each piece signature to the brand while simultaneously creating a cohesive link between the collections
“Throughout my design process, I’m often inspired by menswear. This season, we’ve worked with the same fabrications across both the men’s and the women’s collections and some of the prints translate too. Our signature details that are a part of our brand DNA, like the Bassike slouch, contrast stitching, chain stitch darts, carry across both collections.” says Sams.
There was a room full of smiles as the return of Bassike’s signature hand-dyed garments walked the runway in new colors: bold blues, deep greens, and a rich, warm yellow. The exclusive Polaroid and Agate prints followed, carrying over into the Men’s and Women’s collections with androgynous cuts that continue to blur the boundaries between the binary.
The cummerbund and wrap with a digital shibori print is a key styling highlight. It was expertly used to create shape using oversized clothes; a unique silhouette is what art is made of.
In an Australian first, Bassike also presented an entirely separate consumer show where all looks featured were readily available for purchase. Their AW21 collection showcased their heavier fabrics in unexpectedly brighter colors - going against an industry standard of darker tones which has become a regular for the colder seasons.
Bassike’s AW21 cuts and palettes provide more layering possibilities whilst also “feeling more attune to the lifestyle at the time of year; quiter, slower, and self-reflective,” says Sams. In a way, this shows the natural evolution into Pause, and proves how much the brand values creating cohesion from season to season.
Having beaches and parklands so close to a city brings a need for versatility in Australian fashion. From the explosive prints, summer colors, cohesion across season collections and unisex silhouettes, Bassike has communicated an effortless everyday collection that is both wearable and stylish.
